Part of a musical family, Sheri’s early love of music came through listening to her aunts and uncles perform bluegrass, country, and Southern gospel with other musicians at her aunt’s cabin and local campgrounds. She began her piano study at the age of 8, when an elementary music teacher took note of her interest and talents, and recommended lessons to her parents. Early lessons focused on playing for the church, and by 13 Sheri was playing full services and helping her father, a Baptist minister, with services at missions and nursing homes. A music appreciation class taken in middle school introduced her to classical music and a new interest was born that would turn into a life-long passion.
Sheri attended the University of Houston, where she studied piano with Timothy Hester, a highly acclaimed pianist and accompanist known for his sight-reading skill. She also studied voice in the studios of Elena Nikolaidi and Stephen Smith and was a member of the Concert Chorale. After college, she performed with the Houston Symphony Chorus from 1996-2005. Currently, she teaches privately and is the accompanist for the Lamar Junior High and Lamar Consolidated High School choirs in Rosenberg, TX, as well as a sought-after accompanist for UIL and Solo/Ensemble events.
A private teacher with over 15 years of experience, Sheri believes that studying an instrument should be a full musical experience. In addition to theory and technique necessary for performance, her students also study music history, ear training, and sight reading. Technology is used in the classroom to enhance the learning experience, whether it be listening to a symphony performance or recording the student’s latest musical achievement. A member of the National Piano Teacher’s Guild, Sheri prepares and gives all of her students the opportunity to perform in recitals and judged events. Her students have been noted by judges for their excellent technique and musical abilities.
An active volunteer in her community, Sheri enjoys giving her time to local band and choir programs, the Houston Symphony, and service projects for her music fraternity, Sigma Alpha Iota. She is a wife and mother to two young musicians, and enjoys reading, cooking, and photography.
